Libertarian to challenge Barca for Assembly seat |
|
State Rep. Peter Barca, D-Kenosha, faces no Republican opposition this year, but he has a Nov. 2 election challenger. Political newcomer Daane Hoffman, a Libertarian, is seeking to unseat the veteran Democrat on a platform emphasizing the idea that government should stay out of the way when it comes to job creation and other issues.
Hoffman sums up his political objective in one sentence: “I will vote no on any bill that increases the size, cost, reach and power of the government.”
The Navy veteran and information technology worker said he, as a politician, can support tax incentives for businesses to come to Wisconsin. But, Hoffman said, politicians cannot create jobs.
“They need to make sure that the people who do create jobs don’t have a problem coming to Wisconsin,” Hoffman said.
Hoffman said that involves making sure businesses “don’t have too many hoops to jump through.”
As a Libertarian candidate, Hoffman said he believes the state needs to be sensible about spending on issues such as the environment.
While he said conservatives do not want to spend at all and liberals want to spend as much as possible, he believes there is a certain point where it is sensible to spend money — if it produces results.
Hoffman favors a voucher system to encourage more private school competition for a public education system that he described as “one size fits all.”
“We need public schools, but we need to give them a run for their money, too, and make them step up to the plate,” Hoffman said.
Locally, Hoffman said jobs are a major priority, especially with this week’s closing of the Chrysler engine plant.
Another major issue, he said, is the Kenosha-Racine-Milwaukee commuter rail proposal, which Barca supports. Hoffman opposes it, due to concerns about the government costs of maintenance and ridership subsidies.
“It’s a nice amenity for us to have,” Hoffman said. “But just right now isn’t the right time.” |

| ...and the signature drive ends. |
|
A total of 270 signatures have been collected from Residents of the 64th who were willing to give me the opportunity to be on the ballot. That gives me 70 over the required 200 and a safety net of 35%; in case Madison decides some signatures are illegible or ineligible. I want to give a huge mention of thanks to Joseph Kexel and George Meyers for volunteering without being asked to collect signatures for me. I also want to thank these two veteran candidates for walking me through the obstacles and hoops a person encounters when running for public office. I look forward to using this experience to help out future candidates running for office for the first time. |
